PSC Denies Ordering IGP Retirement

The Police Service Commission has denied issuing a directive for the immediate retirement of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement issued by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission clarified that, the Commission remains one of the Federal Executive Bodies, established under Section 153(m) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

According to Paragraph 30, Part 1 of the Third Schedule to the Constitution and Clause 6(1) of the Police Service Commission (Establishment) Act, 2001, the PSC is responsible for the appointment, promotion, dismissal, and disciplinary control of officers within the Nigeria Police Force—except for the Inspector-General of Police.

The statement added that the law explicitly states that the Inspector-General of Police is appointed by the President based on the advice of the Police Council, and the Police Service Commission has no role in determining his tenure.

It stress that, following its directive for police officers, who have served 35 years or reached the age of 60 to retire, the Commission has received numerous inquiries regarding IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s status.

The Commission said at its 1st Extraordinary Meeting of the 6th Management Board on Friday, January 31, 2025, the Commission only addressed the regularization of the first appointment dates of Cadet ASPs/Inspector Force Entrants saying that the decision had no connection to the Inspector-General of Police or his office.

The PSC affirmed that it is content with the powers granted to it by the Constitution and has no interest in seeking additional authority that is not legally supported.

The Commission also emphasized its strong and cooperative relationship with the Inspector-General of Police in the interest of national security.

It's further reiterated its commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police Force in fulfilling its constitutional duty of ensuring security and maintaining law and order across the nation.
